The effectiveness of hypertonic glucose in resuscitation of the hypothermic heart following potassium chloride arrest.

چکیده
ONE method of overcoming ventricular fibrillation is to produce cardiac arrest by perfusion of the coronary circulation with potassium and restoring a normal rhythm by cardiac massage. Resuscitation of the hypothermic heart after potassium arrest frequently requires prolonged massage, but if hypertonic glucose is administered intravenously when the myocardium is in the "responsive phase", spontaneous contraction occurs more quickly and the heart recovers sooner. The effectiveness of potassium in arresting ventricular fibrillation produced by faradic stimulation in normothermic animals has been studied by Wiggers.'' Cardiac arrest in diastole was produced by injecting potassium chloride solution directly into the ventricles. A normal cardiac beat could be frequently obtained by cardiac massage and the injection of calcium chloride. The potassium ion produces a depression of conduction of the myocardial fibers (Fenn). Wiggers concluded that fibrillation resulted with small amounts of potassium when some areas of the myocardium escaped depression, and cardiac arrest occurred when all areas were depressed by larger doses. Swan and his associates'1 8 abrogated fibrillation in the hypothermic heart by perfusing the coronary circulation with potassium

Administration of Large Volume Hypertonic Solutions for Resuscitation of Hemorrhagic Shock in Rabbit
An animal model was designed to study the effect of large volume Hypertonic Solutions (HTS) for resuscitation following a hypovolemic shock. Resuscitation in hypovolemic animals was performed by infusion of 15 ml/kg of normal saline (group I), 5% sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) (group II), 5% sodium chloride (NaCI) and 7.5 % NaHCO3 1:1 VN (group III), 5% NaC1 (group IV), and 5% NaCl and 5% serum a...
متن کاملA Study of Cerebral Performance Categories Based on Initial Rhythm and Resuscitation Time Following In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in a State Hospital in Turkey
Background: The cerebral performance category (CPC) score is widely used in research and quality assurance to assess neurologic outcome following cardiac arrest. However, little is known about the results of the CPC in Turkey. Objective: This study aimed to determine whether the CPC is associated with the initial rhythm and resuscitation time following re...
متن کاملAmelioration of the effects of ischemic cardiac arrest by the intracoronary administration of cardioplegic solutions.
Interruption of coronary flow during cardiac surgical procedures provides a bloodless flaccid heart and allows precise and rapid correction of complex cardiac defects. However, myocardial damage occurs in direct proportion to the duration of the ischemia. As the induction of cardioplegia simulataneous with the initiation of cardiac ischemia helps to preserve cardiac energy reserves and thus myo...
متن کاملEffects of hypertonic solutions on biochemical parameters and endotoxemic calves resuscitation
Endotoxemia is a common and life threatening inflammatory condition in calves which can lead to shock, multiple organ dysfunction, and immunosuppression and biochemical dyshomeostasis. In order to correct peripheral perfusion and metabolic disturbances, hypertonic fluids are recommended as part of treatment. The aim of the present study was to determine the resuscitating effects of hypertonic s...
متن کاملThe Aassociation between Pre-Cardiac Arrest Comorbidity and Unsuccessful Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in Patients with Cardiac Arrest
Background and Objective: Patients suffering from cardiac arrest (CA) have poor prognosis and survival. The association of pre-arrest comorbidity with unsuccessful resuscitation in patients with CA is far from clear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between pre-existing comorbidity and unsuccessful resuscitation following CA in Iranian patients. Materials and Met...
